Emotions rage unchecked and time is running out in Joel Coen’s propulsive, boldly cinematic adaptation of The Tragedy of Macbeth — a tale of murder, madness, ambition, and wrathful cunning.
In his first solo outing as a director, Coen strips Shakespeare’s iconic and much adapted play to its rawest psychological dimensions. Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand are a late middle-aged Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in this faithful yet inventive, high-velocity vision of the tragedy. They are older, warier, more urgently striving against a merciless clock as they seize together upon a final opportunity for power. Then, they unleash carnage. It the headlong spiral of chaos that follows, their hopes for one another unravel and regret enshrouds every inch of their wrecked world.
