Meet the Barbarians

Shown as part of the Williams College French Film Festival: Exile & Return in New French & Francophone Film "Julie Delpy steadily weaves her good humor with deeper and darker explorations. Meet the Barbarians is wonderfully funny and fleet on its feet, but that comedy also serves to slyly push us into more pressing questions. What is a good person? How do we see ourselves? How do we see others? What does it mean to be part of a community? And, of course, who are the real barbarians here?" — Indiewire The municipality of a small Breton village has decided to welcome a family of Ukrainian refugees. To their surprise, they receive the Fayad family – coming from Syria. They thwart all the clichés that the French expected: they are friendly, refined, educated… So much so that, in this small, humming village, it is no longer clear which side the barbarians are on… French faculty will introduce each film. All films are in French with English subtitles, and are free and open to the public, due to the generosity of the Class of 1960 Scholars Fund, the Romance Languages Department, and the Center for Global Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.ComedyPT1H42M2025-02-25
